Our focus is on understanding the “why” behind behavior as the foundation for effective, nonviolent crisis prevention and response. Participants will explore how behavior serves as a form of communication, with an emphasis on identifying triggers and recognizing early warning signs of escalation. A key component of the session is the distinction between comfort and control, shifting adult responses away from compliance driven reactions toward approaches that prioritize safety, dignity, and emotional regulation. The session highlights the critical role of adult self-regulation, relationship-based practices, and proactive environmental supports in reducing the likelihood of crisis situations. It also prioritizes psychological safety for both students and staff, promoting respectful, non-restrictive responses that support de-escalation, long-term behavior change, and increased access to instruction.
